Great message Pastor Josh. I think you hit the nail on the head with our generation’s bad habits when it comes to our phones, and going back to what you said about the few watching or in the room who are lazy or rest too much, I think there’s something for them to learn from your message too. I think God’s command to rest is not only about taking a break from work but also taking a break from play. To me I see it as taking a break in all aspects. I’ve gained some perspective on the Sabbath from Jordan Peterson’s series on Exodus, where one of the speakers mentioned that when he Sabbaths, he tries to take a break from all his routines. He gives the example of how he normally rests the first 6 days by reading non-fiction (history, biographies, etc.), so if he wants to read as a form of resting during his Sabbath, he instead reads fiction books. In summary I think a good practice for people who over-indulge in resting or playing is to fast (Sabbath) from their normal modes of resting and find new ways to rest. Like you mentioned at different points, I think resting comes down to making room for God, and to do that we have to kick our routines off the throne, whether the routines be work-oriented or play-oriented.

Also, great recommendation to read The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. I read it in Jan. 2024 and, like you said, am still working through my own stubbornness to follow God consistently in this area. I think this book’s message to eliminate the lifestyle of hurriedness can be applied not only to work but to play as well. Take marriage and fatherhood for example. How many times does a man rush a date with his wife or time spent with his kids so that he can get on with watching Netflix or a sports game? I know I’m guilty, and I’ve found just as much good fruit from obeying God (be still) when I’m tempted to play as I do from obeying God when I’m tempted to work.
