Hawthorne Street Community

|

James 1:27 says "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." The Bible instructs us to defend orphans, describes the Lord as a Father to the Fatherless, and promises that God will set the fatherless into families. Hawthorne St. is pursuing its missional assignment of reaching out to the "street kid" population in Montrose, answering the call to participate in God's redemptive plan as He re-parents a parentless generation. Loren and Tanya Gardner pastor this community, which believe that God is calling it to be a family where street kids can find relief from their deepest distress - separation from Jesus and a loving family of God. Street kids live perilous lives of prostitution, drug use, crime and homelessness. They are prey to adult predators who use them for sex, drugs and other damaging purposes. We are exploring and praying about the possibilities of becoming foster parents as well as establishing a venue for street kids to express themselves. As an art teacher in the public school system, Loren, believes that art helps people explore who they are as well as their environment. This will be an exciting way to develop relationships throughout the street kid community.
